Freelance Public Engagement Editor and Writer

Background information

Oxford University Clinical Research Unit Viet Nam (OUCRU) is a leading centre of biomedical research ( Dedicated to research excellence, OUCRU has a commitment to promote its research findings internationally and locally in Vietnam. OUCRU has a dedicated Public Engagement team responsible for promoting the image and science of OUCRU in Vietnam, and designing and implementing training and public engagement activities. These range from workshops in rural farming communities, theatre shows with a health message in local primary schools to running training programmes and promoting collaborations with universities and research institutes in Vietnam.

Terms of Reference

OUCRU is currently looking for a Freelance Public Engagement Editor and Writer for 1 year. It is expected that the Freelancer will be based in the UK, or elsewhere, but will need to be able to travel to Ho Chi Minh City for periods during the appointment. The appointed Freelancer will report to Dr Mary Chambers, Head of Public Engagement, who is based at OUCRU in Viet Nam.

Summary of Work

Currently, the dissemination of information and outputs of public engagement projects and methods is primarily done through online platforms such as MESH (, Communication Initiative Network ( and e-MOPS ( The OUCRU Public Engagement team has a decade of experience and case studies that would be of benefit to the wider engagement community if shared in reports, blogs and peer review publications. OUCRU is seeking to appoint a Freelance editor and writer to make this happen.

Overall, the Freelancer will support the Head of Public Engagement to consolidate reports and evaluation data to provide insights and actionable reflections on past work, to report on PE activities and share findings with the wider engagement community.

Specific outputs

The Freelancer will be required to consolidate learning from PE projects and activities. This involves the following:

  1. Helping finalise peer review publications for 3-4 completed projects;
  2. Collating reports of ongoing and past PE projects into summaries for engagement websites (MESH, OUCRU PE page etc). Approximately 4 closed projects and 4 ongoing projects;
  3. Contributing to the development of report templates for future projects.

Person specification

The successful applicant will work very closely with all of the Public Engagement team in OUCRU and will have opportunity to work with OUCRU partners in the UK – namely MESH and ETHOX. They will be based in the UK but make 2-3 trips to HCMC during the year.

As an individual, they will be personable, organised, enthusiastic, creative and highly motivated. They will be able to work independently.

Above all, they will have a track record of delivering reports and publications in a related field. Evaluation experience would be desirable.
