The Clinical Research Unit in Viet Nam is based in the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) the referral hospital for infectious diseases for the south of the country and under the direction of the Health Service of HCMC and the Ministry of Health Viet Nam. There are extensive collaborative links with hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and several provinces throughout Viet Nam. The research collaboration with the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, HCMC began in 1991. In 2002 the research capacity expanded with the building (jointly funded by the Vietnamese Government and the Wellcome Trust) of a dedicated Institute for Clinical Research in the grounds of the hospital. This Institute houses the routine hospital laboratories, the laboratory research and administrative center of the OUCRU-VN. The collaborative research focuses on the following core areas; malaria, dengue, influenza, typhoid, Infections of the Central Nervous System (viral encephalitis, pyogenic and tuberculous meningitis), Opportunistic Infections related to HIV and tetanus, with additional interest in diphtheria, shigella, fascioliasis, and Streptococcus suis infections. The research covers clinical research and includes research in immunology, host genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, virology, and epidemiology.

We welcome applications for our student elective programme. We have opportunities for medical students, and a limited number of electives for postgraduate science students and visiting fellows. If you are interested in applying for these studentships please complete the application form and send it to us.  We consider applications twice a year in January and October for the following six months (July-Dec or Jan-June). The closing dates for applications are 15th October 2013 and 15th January 2014.
