Background

Oxford University has a Clinical Research Unit in Viet Nam working in partnership with the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City and a network of hospitals across Vietnam to conduct a wide range of clinical studies including clinical trials of drug and vaccines. We are currently running an observational study in Ho Chi Minh City on hand, foot, and mouth disease. We require a study nurse to support the other staff in the patient wards and outpatient clinics at HTD where the study will take place.

Job summary

  • Study contact for patients enrolled in study or who have been approached about study.
  • Accompany patients in ambulance to Medics centre for MRI scan and be familiar with pediatric resuscitation (additional training will be given)
  • Assist with ensuring coordination of study staff and study proceedures.
  • Ensure that all study laboratory test results is fully collected
  • Organise and maintain hard copies of patient data.
  • Organise tracking of study payments and invoices.
  • Enter  study data into an electronic database.
  • Organise outpatient follow up of all enrolled patients. Contact by phone any patient  that does not attend follow up, and encourage them to attend appointments.  Pay reimbursement and compensation for patients.
  • Prepare study supplies and documents required for follow-up visits.
  • Photocopy study documents as required.
  • Perform other duties to suport the study as requested by the study coordinator or study doctors or Principle Investigators

 

Other requirement

Applicants  should have some clinical research experience and also be familiar with computing, data entry and data checking, managing invoices, understand pediatric medical problems to give basic accurate advice by phone.

Working place

Ward C, PICU and follow-up clinic at Hospital of Tropical Diseases. Transfer to and from Medics centre.

Background

Originally established in 1991, OUCRU has developed strong links with many hospitals throughout Viet Nam, Asia, Africa and South America.  The unit’s strategic aim is to have a positive and significant impact on global health and, in particular, the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. This is being achieved via an integrated long-term research programme, contributions to training, the scientific literature, national and international meetings and membership of national and international committees. The Unit is based in the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City.  The Unit’s main foci of work are dengue fever, typhoid fever, infections of the central nervous system, influenza, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis and zoonotic infections.

Job summary and key responsibilities

Job summary
Antimalarial drug resistance is a problem of great importance of the global malaria control and elimination program. Microscopic examination has been considered as a “gold standard” for Malaria diagnostic and played a very crucial role in malaria clinical trial and in vitro studies. The technician will join our malaria group to carry out those in malaria studies.
The Malaria technician will play a important role in the malaria research group and the main focus of his/her work will be on microscopy for malaria diagnosis, parasitemia estimation and staging; collecting, processing and storing of samples.

Key responsibilities and tasks:
The candidate will organize and perform the following at both study sites and Malaria laboratory
- collecting, processing and storing of blood samples
- malaria parasite diagnosis and estimation (parasite counting and staging)
- collecting and storing filter paper blood samples
- smearing, staining and counting testing result of in vitro culture samples,
- storing sample blood slides  at Malaria lab
- perform molecular testing at the field site
Other tasks as requested by the malaria group.

• Technician certificate will be required
• Experience with laboratory technician work and malaria diagnosis
• Experience in working with patients and in hospital
• Good interpersonal skills, team working, excellent documentation

You will be working in the molecular diagnostic laboratory and be part of the emerging viral infections group, a team of >10 enthusiastic scientists involved in research projects on hand, foot and mouth disease and emerging influenza viruses.

Job summary

Support the current molecular diagnostic team in the following areas:

  • Specimen reception and specimen data entry into database (Freezerworks)
  • Perform molecular diagnostic tests for a multitude of respiratory and central nervous system pathogens for ongoing study protocols and complying with worksheet organisation
