Nguyen Van Cuong

Nguyen Van Cuong, DVM, MSc

ViParc Project Co-ordinator

Cuong graduated in Veterinary Medicine from Nong Lam University (Ho Chi Minh City) in 2008. After that, he was awarded a Master’s degree on Biotechnology from the University of Paris-Sud XI, special on the topic ‘Genes, Cells, Development, and Evolution’. Early 2011, he started working as a research assistant at the Zoonosis Group at Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam. During 2012-2015 Cuong worked as a field co-ordinator for VIZIONS (Vietnam Initiatiative on Zoonotic Infections), a Wellcome Trust-funded Project. This project involved interacting with a large number of human communities, and sampling a range of animal species, both domestic and wild. Several studies that were conducted as part of this large-scale project found antibiotic resistance (AMR) in both humans and animals, and AMR became an importance research focus in the Zoonosis Group.

Cuong aims to understand the origin, nature, and public health importance of AMR in the farm animal reservoir in Vietnam, as well as the control strategies to limit AMR occurrence. He became ViParc project co-ordinator in 2016. Cuong has also been working on a PhD through the Open University (UK) using data generated from the ViParc project since 2017.
