Clinical care relies heavily on repeated blood tests, vital sign measurements and continuous observation; all of which are time-consuming, invasive, and require significant clinical expertise. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>The tricky part is that while most patients recover fully from self-limited fevers, 5-10% of hospitalised cases progress to severe disease, sometimes within hours. Doctors must catch those at risk early enough to act.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>This demand for constant vigilance defines dengue care. It places immense burden on healthcare systems in low-resource settings, especially during outbreaks when hospitals are overwhelmed and resources stretched thin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h3>AI tools easing frontline burden \u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p>At Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam, a team of researchers led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/people\/ho-quang-chanh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Ho Quang Chanh<\/a> is developing smarter solutions to transform dengue care: a wearable device called <strong>D-SCAPE<\/strong>, and an AI-based clinical decision support system named <strong>D-CAT<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"816\" height=\"500\" class=\"wp-image-47657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2.png 816w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-768x471.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 816px) 100vw, 816px\" \/><\/a>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The integrated system of D-SCAPE and D-CAT enables seamless data flow from wearable devices to AI models, supporting smarter and faster clinical decisions in dengue care.<\/em>\u00a0<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<h5>D-SCAPE: A novel wearable device for dengue\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n<p>The Dengue Severity Classification and Prediction Wearable (D-SCAPE) is a low-cost wrist device designed to continuously track key parameters: heart rate, blood oxygen (SpO\u2082), blood pressure and haematocrit (HCT).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Using AI-powered waveform analysis, D-SCAPE can detect early signs of deterioration before the symptoms become visible. It supports bedside, real-time monitoring without the need for needles, wires, or repeated blood draws.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>The next development phase (2025 &#8211; 2028) is supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifearc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LifeArc<\/a> to improve functionality and optimise design for clinical usage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h5>D-CAT: Turning data into decisions\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n<p>Working alongside D-SCAPE, the Dengue Clinical Assessment Tool (The D-CAT) integrates wearable data with routine lab results and clinical observation.<\/p>\n<p>AI models then forecast how a patient\u2019s condition may progress over the next 48 hours, helping healthcare workers prioritise care, make faster decisions, and admit high-risk patients before they become critically ill. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Together, D-SCAPE and D-CAT shifts dengue care from reactive to proactive, improving both the quality and equity of care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-572c2ba elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"572c2ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBy automating routine monitoring and supporting clinical decisions, D-SCAPE and D-CAT help ease the burden on frontline staff and\u00a0give them more time to focus on what matters most: caring for their patient.\u201d \t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">Dr Ho Quang Chanh, Principal Investigator.&nbsp;<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-35dbef5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"35dbef5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Built in Vietnam, for Vietnam \u00a0<\/h3><p>Developed by OUCRU in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bvbnd.vn\/\">Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/\">Imperial College London<\/a>, D-SCAPE and D-CAT are firmly rooted in Vietnam&#8217;s healthcare context. \u00a0<\/p><p>Unlike AI models trained on large open datasets in high-income settings, these tools were built on over 20 years of local research, including data from 8,000 real dengue cases and 3,000 hours of pulse waveform from 300 Vietnamese patients. This makes them uniquely tailored to local needs and realities. \u00a0<\/p><p>That precision comes with challenges: ensuring accuracy across diverse populations, maintaining clinical relevance, and regularly updating algorithms with fresh data.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"536\" class=\"wp-image-47661 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3.png 920w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3-768x447.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The tools have been tested on 50 dengue patients in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.<\/em>\u00a0<\/figcaption><p>Implementing these tools at local hospitals also meant navigating real-world challenges: outdated infrastructure, inconsistent internet, and non-standardised medical records. OUCRU is now working with hospitals to validate the apps and integrate them into Vietnam\u2019s growing digital health ecosystem.\u00a0<\/p><\/figure><p>Recent changes in regulation have helped. In 2024, Vietnam introduced national guidelines for testing AI-assisted software and wearable devices on patients, providing a clearer, safer framework for innovation. \u00a0<\/p><h3>Shaped by those who use them\u00a0<\/h3><p>D-SCAPE and D-CAT\u00a0are not just research prototypes. They\u2019ve been co-developed with Vietnamese clinicians and shaped by continuous feedback from those who use them most: patients and frontline healthcare workers.\u00a0<\/p><p>Children especially appreciated D-SCAPE&#8217;s needle-free experience.
