{"id":48101,"date":"2025-07-02T10:56:04","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T03:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/?p=48101"},"modified":"2025-07-02T10:56:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T03:56:10","slug":"effective-science-communication-strengthen-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/id\/effective-science-communication-strengthen-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Enhancing research through effective science communication and strengthening community bonds\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In May 2025, hundreds of science communications and public and community engagement practitioners gathered at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abdn.ac.uk\/events\/conferences\/pcst-2025\/\">Public and Communication Science Technology Conference<\/a> (PCST) 2025, discussing the theme \u201cUsing Science Communication to Effect Positive Change: Exploring Transitions, Traditions and Tensions\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four different projects at OUCRU were featured at the conference, emphasising OUCRU\u2019s vision to make research relevant and impactful through effective public and community engagement activities, which nurture understanding, trust, and collaboration between scientists and the community where our research is conducted and has an impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contextual and cultural understanding: the key to making engagement relevant and effective&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Around-the-world good practice confirms again the importance of tailouring science communication to local contexts. <em>\u201cMeaningful engagement in science is about genuinely valuing the lived, ancestral, and experiential knowledge that communities hold,\u201d <\/em>said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/people\/eva-simarmata\/\">Eva Simarmata<\/a>, Public and Community Engagement Officer, OUCRU Indonesia<em>.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example is from OUCRU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/public-engagement-home\/\">Public and Community Engagement<\/a> group\u2019s project producing a communication video targeting rural parents, aiming to convince them to vaccinate their children. Open science, meaning the research itself should be done by the researcher and its community. The community not only receptor, but they should contribute to involve the community they serve.\u00a0Open science will lead to open engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"759\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48102\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image.png 759w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Rajesh Tandon Co-Chair, UNESCO Chair in Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, \u201c<em>the public and community engagement in science and science communication practice is not yet widely recognised or integrated into research and academic institutions in Indonesia, while it should be a component that shapes the entire research process,<\/em>\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/people\/hanifah-nisrina\/\">Hanifah Nisrina<\/a>, Communications and Digital Engagement Officer, OUCRU Indonesia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the roles of science communicators, public engagement officers, and public relations professionals remain unclear and overlapping in many countries in the Global South. There are gaps in literature and discourse including dependency on foreign (mostly Northern) science news sources, the low profile of domestic science reporting, uncritical or manipulable journalism, political restrictions, and a lack of synergy between scientists and science communicators.
