Dr Raph Hamers is an internist and infectious disease physician, trained in The Netherlands, and an Associate Professor at University of Oxford, based at the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit in Jakarta, Indonesia. He holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam, and an honorary consultant position at Amsterdam University Medical Centres (AMC). His research to date has been centered on the clinical management, molecular epidemiology and public health aspects of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly drug-resistant HIV. After joining EOCRU in 2017, he initiated the Clinical Infectious Disease Research Programme, with a focus on tuberculosis, antimicrobial drug resistance, emerging infectious diseases, diagnostics and multidisciplinary approaches to improve health outcomes in low-resource settings. His work emphasizes the strengthening of local research capacity and developing a broader collaborative clinical research agenda with the Unit’s principal partners Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia, Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, Oxford Tropical Network, and others. He also manages the Universities of Indonesia-Oxford Clinical Research Laboratory (IOCRL), a recently established hub to support clinical trials, training, education and public and community engagement with science in Indonesia.
