A case study from Indonesia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When COVID-19 struck, it required not just medical interventions but also exposed how communication strategies during health crises like the pandemic could significantly affect the public\u2019s attention and trust.<br>As the world\u2019s fourth most populous country, with more than 17,000 islands and over 700 local languages and distinct cultural traditions, having proactive communication leading to more effective responses in future health crises becomes a real challenge in Indonesia.<br>To address this challenge, the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) Indonesia gathered 30 stakeholders, including government officials, researchers, healthcare providers, public health professionals (such as WHO and NGO representatives), and former COVID-19 volunteers in Jakarta. Using the participatory mapping method, the project team empowered participants to visualise the complex communication landscape by placing key factors based on their perceived effectiveness and finally revealed nuanced understandings of who truly held influence during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC03396-scaled.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Public health professionals and community leaders discussing trusted voices in health communication as part of OUCRU Indonesia\u2019s engagement project.\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC03396-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC03396-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC03396-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC03396-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC03396-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC03396-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The findings of this activity highlight the value of participatory approaches in identifying context-specific communication dynamics. The project team then can conclude that effective communication is not solely dependent on the accuracy of information, but also on the credibility, relatability, and accessibility of the messenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PCST-2025-Presentation-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PCST-2025-Presentation-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PCST-2025-Presentation-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PCST-2025-Presentation-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PCST-2025-Presentation-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PCST-2025-Presentation-1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PCST-2025-Presentation-1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings of this study have important implications for the design of future outbreak communication strategies, both in Indonesia and in similar settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Engage trusted local figures, such as religious and community leaders, from the outset of any public health response.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Involve influencers constructively, recognising their potential to either support or undermine public understanding.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support scientific experts in becoming more visible and relatable, through media training and cross-sector collaboration.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/project\/seacovariants\/\">SEACOVARIANTS<\/a> project, aims to develop and apply a multidisciplinary research platform for rapid assessment of the biological significance of SARS-CoV-2 variants, thereby supporting local policymakers with evidence-based decision-making, these findings reinforce the need to build bridges between scientific expertise, cultural understanding, and public trust for future health crises responses, particularly in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-issuu wp-block-embed-issuu\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Who held the microphone during COVID-19 in Indonesia? \" src=\"https:\/\/e.issuu.com\/embed.html?u=oucru_vietnam&#038;d=who_held_the_microphone_during_covid-19_in_indones\" style=\"border:none; width: 800px; height: 613px;\" allow=\"clipboard-write,allow-top-navigation,allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation,allow-downloads,allow-scripts,allow-same-origin,allow-popups,allow-modals,allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox,allow-forms\"  allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interested in collaborating on public and community engagement in health research?
