It cares for the region\u2019s most severe infectious complications and multi-organ cases, receiving referrals from hospitals across the area and responding to severe infections, local outbreaks and emerging pandemic threats.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Before her appointment, Dr Ng\u00e2n served as Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases at\u00a0Ch\u1ee3\u00a0R\u1eaby\u00a0Hospital. Over more than a decade at the hospital, she has combined frontline clinical care with an active research career, managing patients with severe infectious diseases and acute poisoning while contributing to nationally and internationally\u00a0recognised\u00a0research in infectious diseases,\u00a0toxicology\u00a0and snakebite envenoming.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"597\" height=\"393\" class=\"wp-image-57180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image.png 597w, https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/a>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>In\u00a0July\u00a02026,\u00a0Dr\u00a0Ng\u00e2n\u00a0was\u00a0formally\u00a0appointed\u00a0Head\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Department\u00a0of\u00a0Tropical\u00a0Diseases. Her research was supported by an international supervisory panel, led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndm.ox.ac.uk\/team\/jeremy-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Jeremy Day<\/a>\u00a0(OUCRU\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0University\u00a0of\u00a0Oxford),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpool.ac.uk\/people\/william-hope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor William Hope<\/a> (University of Liverpool), and Professor Tr\u1ea7n Quang B\u00ecnh (Hospital for Tropical Diseases and HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Her PhD thesis,\u00a0<em>Tamoxifen-Boosted Antifungal Therapy for Cryptococcal Meningitis<\/em>, focused on improving the understanding and treatment of central nervous system infections in Vietnam. Combining clinical epidemiology, a\u00a0randomised\u00a0controlled trial, microbiological investigations and cardiac safety analyses, Dr Ng\u00e2n evaluated whether repurposing tamoxifen as an adjunct to standard antifungal therapy could accelerate fungal clearance and improve outcomes for patients with cryptococcal meningitis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Her work also\u00a0provided\u00a0new insights into the epidemiology of CNS infections and the\u00a0characteristics\u00a0of\u00a0<em>Cryptococcus<\/em>\u00a0isolates in Vietnam, contributing evidence to support better management of this life-threatening disease in resource-limited settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Reflecting on her time as a doctoral student, Dr Ng\u00e2n said: \u2018My PhD journey at OUCRU reinforced my belief that the best research begins with real clinical questions and should ultimately improve patient care. Throughout the journey, I learned to embrace unexpected challenges as opportunities for growth and discovered the value of mentorship, collaboration, and international partnerships.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018I am deeply grateful to my supervisors, colleagues, patients, and family, whose support made this journey possible. Those experiences continue to shape how I care for patients, lead my\u00a0team,\u00a0and approach research today.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>In her new role, Dr Th\u1ee7y Ng\u00e2n aims to strengthen the link between research and patient care, while supporting evidence-based practice, international\u00a0collaboration\u00a0and the development of future clinician-scientists.
