BackgroundThe Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, with sites offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia and Kathmandu in Nepal. In Vietnam, we are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. OUCRU Nepal closely collaborates with the National Academy of Medical Science in Kathmandu, and OUCRU Indonesia exists in partnership with the University of Indonesia. As a Wellcome Trust Africa Asia Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991.

OUCRU’s vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Priority is given to health issues important to the hospitals where we work, and to the countries as a whole where we operate: Vietnam, Indonesia and Nepal.  All work is intended not only to benefit the patients seen daily at our host hospitals, but also to help improve patient care.

Job summaryThis position will take an oversight responsibility for Laboratory housekeeping and work closely with laboratory housekeeping team to ensure the laboratory 6S standard are maintained. The job holder for this position will report to and work under close supervision of Lab Facility Coordinator. This position might require to work out of working hours, particularly at night, weekends and public holiday to support equipment team and facility team in troubleshooting.  
Key responsibilities and tasksThe job description of “Laboratory Technical Assistant” includes but not limited to the following activities;

1. Support Laboratory Equipment team

– Replace compressed gas supply tank for Incubators.
– Refill liquid nitrogen,
– Autoclave recyle products and waste products on demand,
– Clean laboratory equipment on demand, for example, water bath, fume hood, workstation.
– Support the Analytical Pipette Management.

2. Support BSL2/ BSL3 facility maintenance

– Clean BSL3 operation area and gas supply area every month
– Clean G4 filter for BSL3 laboratory every week 
– Check (and replace as necessary) prefilter for water purification system every month
– Check (and replace as necessary) laboratory chairs
– Support deep clean the laboratory every 06 months
– Support in reorganization of the laboratories, moving instruments as necessary.
– Support warehouse coordinator to reorganize heavy items in store as neceessary. 
– Support to monitor the pest control in laboratory according to Estate plan.
– Monitor the Laboratory environment conditions including Lab  room temperatures.

3. Support freezer maintenance

– Clean the gaskets of the freezers and rubbish under freezers every six months
– Clean freezer warehouse every month
– Clean and defrost freezer on demand

4. Support recycling product

– Collect and clean recycle boxes/ bottle in laboratory everyday
– Autoclave waste bio-chemical hazard bin and clean for recycle
– Refill/replace hygiene product in laboratory: hand sanitizer, hand cleaning, hand drying tissue
– Organize back up space to keep reuse/recycle of ice pack and dry ice

5. Support checking safety equipment

– Check eye wash and emergency shower everyday
– Check supply for absorbant towel on each floor to ensure availability as needed

6. Support housekeeping and waste management

– Support Laboratory Logistics Asssistant to maintain cleaness and 6S practice in reagent preparation room.
– Work closely and function as a backup for house keeper team to ensure proper waste collection and disposal according to laboratory procedure
– Support to dispose products as requirement
– Transport chemical/ hazardous waste to HTD collection area.
 
Selection criteria  Essential

– Diploma/ Vocational Certificate/ Professional Certificate in civil electricity/ refrigeration electricity/ construction.
– Previous experience working as a technician/maintenance officer
– Attention to detail and able to perform physical demanding tasks such as moving heavy load items, working at height and limited space.
– Strong awareness of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety standards in a laboratory setting
– Flexibility to work collaboratively with the equipment team, facility team, housekeeping team, and other laboratory staff.
– Able to comprehend and read English materials, and capable of communicating in English.

Desired

– Having background or able to learn and get training in following area: biosafety, chemical safety, electrical safety, first-aid, fire fighting, work at high, work at limited space, work with pressurize system (autoclave/ gas cylinder/ liquid nitrogen)
– Previous experience working in a laboratory, technical, or facility maintenance role is an advantage
Benefits– Contracted salary: Job grade: IC2/RS2; salary ranges: $ 1,147 – 1,262 gross per month
– Optional insurance: In-patient and out-patient medical coverage; Personal accident insurance coverage
– Two months’ salary for annual bonus and clothes
– Annual leave 18 days each year for the first year, a maximum of 30 days
– Other responsibilities and benefits are based on Viet Nam Labour Law.
