OUCRU Nepal is pleased to launch the second episode of UNDAUNTED, OUCRU NEPAL podcast series that celebrates stories of resilience, growth, and determination from the people behind our research.
In Episode 2, “Through Uncertainty, with Courage: A Journey of Dr. Sabina Dongol,” we talked about how she explored a remarkable professional journey shaped by perseverance, courage, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty.
Born and educated in Kathmandu, Dr. Dongol began her career in the microbiology laboratory at Patan Hospital, where she spent years building her technical expertise and managing the challenges of a busy clinical laboratory. While her position offered stability and security, she found herself asking an important question: What comes next?
That question led her to make one of the most significant decisions of her life.
Driven by a desire to learn and grow, Dr. Dongol left a secure, permanent position to pursue a PhD through the University of Oxford. It was a decision filled with uncertainty, especially as a working mother with young children and no clear roadmap for the future. Yet, supported by her family and inspired by her father’s lifelong encouragement to pursue education and personal growth, she chose to take the leap.
In the podcast, Dr. Dongol reflects on the fears, doubts, and challenges she faced during her PhD journey. She speaks candidly about navigating unfamiliar academic environments, adapting to new opportunities, and finding the confidence to move forward despite uncertainty.
Today, those decisions have helped shape a remarkable career. Dr. Dongol leads the OUCRU Nepal Microbiology Laboratory, supports research collaborations with partner hospitals, serves as a Principal Investigator on multiple research projects, and mentors a growing team of young scientists.
Throughout the conversation, she highlights the importance of teamwork, leadership, and continuous learning. She shares how OUCRU Nepal has provided opportunities to collaborate with international researchers, develop new skills, secure research funding, and contribute to strengthening microbiology and research capacity in Nepal.
The episode also explores the unique challenges faced by women in science and research. Dr. Dongol discusses balancing professional ambitions with family responsibilities and emphasizes the importance of self-belief, mentorship, and taking calculated risks.
As UNDAUNTED continues to spotlight the inspiring stories of OUCRU Nepal staff, Dr. Dongol’s journey serves as a reminder that growth often begins where certainty ends.
