OUCRU contributes to ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership Programme launch

OUCRU joined regional and international partners in Bangkok for the launch of the ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership programme during a visit by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, to the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU).

The new partnership aims to strengthen regional collaboration on health security by supporting research, capacity building and knowledge exchange across Southeast Asia.

Representing OUCRU, Associate Professor Ngô Thị Hoa, Head of the Zoonoses Research Group in Ho Chi Minh City, presented the SOAP-PEx (Strengthening One Health Capacity to Address Antimicrobial Resistance and Streptococcus suis through Peer Exchange) project.

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the project seeks to strengthen laboratory and research capacity to improve the sampling, diagnosis and understanding of Streptococcus suis prevalence in Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. It also builds regional expertise in zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance through training, knowledge exchange and collaboration.

SOAP-PEx is a collaborative initiative led by OUCRU Ho Chi Minh City and developed with OUCRU Hanoi, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine HCMC (PNTU) in Vietnam, the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit (LOMWRU), and the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD) in Myanmar.

Participation in the launch reflects OUCRU’s long-standing commitment to collaborative research and capacity strengthening across Southeast Asia. By working with partners to build sustainable laboratory and research networks, OUCRU supports stronger regional preparedness for emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
