| Background | The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, with sites offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia and Kathmandu in Nepal. In Vietnam, we are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. OUCRU Nepal has partnerships with the Patan Academy of Health Sciences and Patan Hospital, and OUCRU Indonesia exists in partnership with the University of Indonesia. As a Wellcome Trust Africa Asia Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991. OUCRU’s vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Priority is given to health issues important to the hospitals where we work, and to the countries as a whole where we operate: Vietnam, Indonesia and Nepal. | Job summary | The Data Scientist will work in the Research team (OUCRU Hanoi) under the supervision Dr Vu Tien Viet Dung, and of the assigned staff with delegated supervisory roles in the team and in collaboration with other teams across the OUCRU Programme, and with local and international study partners. The Data Scientist is required to have experience working with data systems and processing large datasets to improve data quality, interporability and security and applying advanced methods to develop algorithms that can be implemented to improve patient care and treatment in healthcare settings in Vietnam. He/she will work closely with other teams across OUCRU Programme and with study partners to develop locally feasible work plans and implement the work plans to achieve the expected study deliverables. He/she is required to establish good working relationships and provide technical support to the team, its partners and collborators as required. |
| Key responsibilities and tasks | – Carry out activities to maintain research data systems and data management within the Data Science team following the Vietnamese and UK data protection laws, alongside technical and domain experts with the research and research support teams including IT, Data Management and Data Governance teams across OUCRU Program. – Develop algorithms that can be implemented to improve the outcomes of research programs and interventions at the patient, hospital and community level – Employ a range of advanced techniques such as data mining, machine learning, or artificial intelligence to reveal unique patterns and actionable insight impacting research and clinical practices in the research programs and interventions. – Keep up to date with the current literature and developing relevant research and data techniques and methodologies for use in study design, implementation and analysis – Provide data related technical expertise and support in organizing research related training, events and meetings; – Participate in research meetings, training and skills development activities as appropriate; – Prepare and deliver research specific presentations and training to support in research implementation and data collection as appropriate; – Provide timely reports to supervisor/PI on the progress, issues and outputs of specific research activities and milestones as required; – Maintain effective communication with other staff and collaborators to facilitate coordination, planning and implementation of research studies; – Other tasks requested by the Supervisor/Director. |
| Selection criteria | Essential: – A master degree in a quantitative discipline (IT, Computer Science, Data Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Statistics or similar) – Have experience in solving big/complex data problems with state-of-the-art analytical techniques, particularly in machine/deep learning – High programming proficiency (Python and/or R) – Excellent spoken and written Vietnamese and good levels of English language skills (an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent) – Attention to details and highly organizedStrong interpersonal and communication skills – Willingness and ability to travel to different provinces in Vietnam and overseas, interact with, and work in a range of local partners including IT teams in healthcare facilities and other partners – Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, and yet be a team player – Energetic and creative; open to new approaches and ideas Desired: – Experience in working with healthcare environments in Vietnam – Experience in developing data and/or digital ecosystems in healthcare environment in Vietnam – Experience working with health data or biological data – Experience contributing to the research community through re-useable code and publication |
| Benefits | – Contracted salary: + Grade: 5-7, depending on level of experience and training + Salary ranges: 1,325-1,628 USD gross/month – Optional insurance: In-patient and out-patient medical coverage; Personal accident insurance coverage – Two months salary for annual bonus and clothes – Annual leave 18 days/year for the first year, a maximum of 30 days – Other responsibilities and benefits are based on Viet Nam Labor Law. |
