BackgroundThe Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, with sites offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia and Kathmandu in Nepal. In Vietnam, we are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. OUCRU Nepal closely collaborates with the National Academy of Medical Sciences in Kathmandu, and OUCRU Indonesia exists in partnership with the University of Indonesia. As a Wellcome Trust Africa Asia Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991.

OUCRU’s vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Priority is given to health issues important to the hospitals where we work, and to the countries as a whole where we operate: Vietnam, Indonesia and Nepal.  All work is intended not only to benefit the patients seen daily at our host hospitals, but also to help improve patient care.

Job summaryThe TB group’s major research interests are improving TB diagnosis and treatment by carrying out clinical trials of new diagnostic tests and therapeutic approaches. We also aim to understand how genetic variations in both host and pathogen influence disease presentations, treatment responses and outcomes. We are in collaboration with three hospitals in Vietnam (the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital and National Lung Hospital) and overseas institutions (Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Washington, California, Harvard, Melbourne, Radboud, Stellenbosch) to conduct clinical and laboratory studies.

The TB group currently consists of six small teams, including Data team. Data team currently consists of two PhD students, three RAs, and one team leader. They are in charge of bioinformatics research and perform statistical analysis for various studies within TB group.
We are seeking a motivated and talented person who will contribute to the bioinformatics research focusing on human and bacterial genome studies performed in the TB group.
Key responsibilities and tasksMore specifically, the tasks involve:

Data processing, quality control, and standardization: Perform preprocessing, quality control, and genotype imputation for large-scale genomic datasets. Standardize and harmonize existing TB GWAS datasets within the group, including genome build alignment, allele orientation, variant annotation, and metadata integration to enable cross-study comparability and downstream analyses.
Database development: Build and curate reference databases for GWAS annotation using resources such as the UK Biobank, GWAS Catalogue, gnomAD, GTEx, pQTL, and mQTL datasets to enhance variant interpretation and downstream analyses.
Pipeline testing and adoption: Evaluate, test, and implement existing computational pipelines/tools for human genomic data analysis, ensuring accuracy, reproducibility, and efficiency.
Research support: Provide computational and analytical support for ongoing and future genomics research projects within the group.
Documentation and reporting: Maintain clear documentation of workflows, analyses, and results to support reproducibility and knowledge transfer.
Collaboration: Work closely with researchers, bioinformaticians, and data analysts to troubleshoot, optimize, and adapt pipelines for specific project needs.
Other duties as required: Contribute to group-wide activities, including training, maintaining computational resources, and supporting multi-omics integration projects when necessary.

– Experience with Linux, Python, and/or R programming, Nextflow, particularly for handling and analyzing genomic data.
– Ability to follow and adapt existing computational pipelines, with strong attention to detail and reproducibility.
– Good English language skills (written and spoken) for documentation and communication within the research team.
– Basic knowledge of statistical principles relevant to genomic data analysis.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, willingness to learn and develop new skills, self-initiative, and reliability in completing assigned tasks.

– Prior experience working with genomic or bioinformatics datasets in research or applied settings.
– Familiarity with data quality control and statistical methods for high-dimensional or complex biological data.
– Experience with database management and/or version control systems (e.g., Git).
– Background knowledge in clinical research, basic sciences, or molecular biology that supports interpretation of genomic data.
Benefits– Contracted salary ranges: $ 991 – 1,204 gross per month
