The Equitable Research Partnership: Initiative in Providing International Research Management Skill Sets in South East Asia (EQUIPSEA) will organize an intensive four-day workshop from February 10 to 13, 2026.

EQUIPSEA is a 12-month capacity-strengthening programme, designed to address the limited institutional research and financial management capacity in Low- and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) research organizations, with a specific focus on Southeast Asia.

Through intensive mentoring, training, and community-building, the workshop supports participants to:

  • Enhance research management and administration skills for equitable partnerships.
  • Understand the impact of structural inequalities on research capacity in LMICs and research administration.
  • Learn practical strategies for inclusive and effective research team administration.
  • Build regional networks of research managers and administrators for mutual support and collaboration.
  • Gain confidence to seek leadership roles in research administration and management.

The workshop is funded by the British Academy. It is co-developed by members affiliated with the University of Oxford and the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom), Universiti Putra Malaysia, and the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

ORGANISORS

Head of Zoonoses Group at OUCRU, Vietnam 

Dr. Hoa  is  head of the zoonosis group leading the team of thirteen members, including two internationally trained post-docs. She recieved research funding from Government and Inetrnational Funders. Hoa’s research networks with governmental local research institutions within Vietnam, in SEA and InternationalShe also hold a part time l appointment as head of the Microbiology and Parasitology Unit at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in HCMC, VietnamThese have given her opportunities to experience different research management/ administrative environments through the lens of a researcher to hugely appreciate the professional grant administrative system. She hopes this initiative will provide knowledge and flatform to improve the implementation of grant administration and finace to support the excellent development of research and researchers in SEA to contribute toward the equity in Inetrnational Research Collaborationa

International Research Development Manager, University of Glasgow, Scotland 

Mary Ryan has several years’ experience in international research management and development at the University of Glasgow. She has led several workshops to strengthen research management and administration capacity in Africa. Ms Ryan will lead the process of programme development and share knowledge on lessons learned from the Africa workshop to co-lead and customise the current proposed programme in SEA. Ms. Ryan and Assoc. Prof. Hoa met several times in training and meeting events within the ZELS (Zoonotic Emerging Livestock System) programme funded by UKRI. 

Deputy Director of Research Grant Management Section, Malaysia 

Dr. Ibrahim leads research programme at the faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, and is the deputy director of the grant management section, University Putra Malaysia. The dual positions in both sides of the research management offers a unique view for Dr. Ibrahim to identify critical and improvable gaps in grant management system. Dr. Ibrahim’ s networks of both scientists and administrators within Malaysia and in SEA to effectively will assist him in effective delivering this programme. 

Senior Change Capacity Strengthening Manager at the University of Oxford, UK

Mrs Genevieve Kiff is an experienced and qualified chartered accountant and Good Financial Grant Practice  (GFGP) implementation specialist. She was one of the founders in the development of GFGP.  She began her career as a research scientist and transitioned to accounting qualifying with Ernst & Young. Genny brings over 20 years of experience from the Wellcome Trust and her two recent roles as CFO with Wellcome Sanger Institute and Oxford University Clinical Trials Organisation in SE Asia. She now specialises in transforming organisations financial governance, in particular research organisations and works as a Senior Change Capacity Strengthening Manager for University of Oxford. Ms Kiff will share her experiences on Good Financial Grant Practice, which has been identified as a particular area of Interest in SEA amongst researchers and administrators. She will lead the training programme on organizational financial governance.

Duyen Nguyen

Senior Grants Officer at Nuffield Department of Medicine – the University of Oxford, UK

Duyen currently works in research grants management at the University of Oxford and brings several years of experience supporting research funding at both the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) and the University of Oxford. Her expertise spans the full project lifecycle, including pre-award budgeting, post-award financial management, compliance, and reporting for a range of international funders. As one of the organizers of the Research and Financial Management Workshop 2026, she is committed to fostering collaboration, promoting best practices, and supporting effective research delivery. She looks forward to connecting with participants throughout the workshop.

Postdoctoral Scientist at OUCRU, Vietnam

Dr. Thanh Nguyen is a postdoctoral scientist at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit. He investigates how genome mutations affect protein structure and function in pathogens, humans, and animals, focusing on antimicrobial resistance and zoonoses. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from Sungkyunkwan University. His work integrates bioinformatics, molecular biology, and machine learning to support pathogen surveillance and the development of novel diagnostics. His interests also include project and team management, grant management, and research support. 

Lab Technician at OUCRU, Vietnam

His research interest is using bioinformatics tools to identify the mechanism of antibiotic resistance, pathogenicity, and genetic relationships of Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus suis, Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Assoc. Prof./Lecturer at Food Science Department, Faculty of Food Science UPM, Malaysia

Dr. Hanan Hasan currently serves at the Food Science Department, Faculty of Food Science UPM. His teaching experience covers numerous fields, including Food Microbiology, Bioprocessing Technology, and Food Diagnostics for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is also a distinguished researcher in Food Microbiology and Biotechnology, particularly in metabolic engineering. His passion for research and education motivate him to strive for continuous improvement in teaching and learning. As his goal is to ensure students excel academically, he focuses on bridging the gap between theory and industry demands. By understanding the latest trends and equipping students with relevant skills, he prepares them for the next phase of their careers, ensuring they are employment-ready with strong minded character.

No, there is no restriction on the country of origin for applicants. However, to be eligible for the OUCRU’s travel award, applicants must be nationals of, and currently affiliated with, a research institution or organization based in one of the following countries: Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, or Cambodia. 

For participants awarded a travel grant: Participants who successfully apply for and are awarded a OUCRU’s travel grant will have the following costs covered: 

  • Accommodation and travel expenses 
  • Workshop-related costs, including lunch, tea breaks, and stationery (e.g., printed materials, badges, pens, notebooks). Additionally, any eligible expenses incurred outside the event (e.g., meals during travel, dinners) will be reimbursed upon submission of valid receipts. Applicants must apply for travel award in the designated section of the application form. 

For participants not awarded OUCRU’s travel grant: 
Participation in the workshop is free of charge. The following will be provided: 

  • Tea breaks, lunches, and workshop stationery (e.g., printed materials, badges, pens, and notebooks) will be provided. 
    A logistics help desk will be available to assist participants in arranging dinner orders (with receipts) for those who wish to join the workshop dinner on Feb 12, 2026.

The Workshop will be held in February 10-13, 2026.

Yes. Upon receiving the invitation to participate in the workshop, participants will be asked to complete a priority mapping questionnaire to help trainers tailor the programme to identified needs. In addition, participants will be required to complete preand post-workshop surveys to assess changes in knowledge and skills gained through the workshop.

A certificate of completion is the standard form of recognition typically provided to all participants who complete the training. 

By integrating a responsive approach into the programme design, the workshop fosters regional network building by bringing participants together to establish connections for mutual support and collaboration, thereby strengthening essential professional networks in the region.

Yes. The workshop is designed to provide intensive mentoring, skills training, and community-building throughout the four-day program. A key objective is to help participants establish regional networks that foster ongoing peer support and collaboration beyond the duration of the workshop. 

To assess learning outcomes and promote sustained engagement: 

  • A pre- and post-workshop assessment will be conducted to evaluate participants’ learning and development. 
  • A follow-up survey will be sent approximately three months after the workshop to gather feedback on participants’ progress and to offer continued guidance or advice as needed. 

This structure is intended to ensure that the learning experience extends beyond the event, supporting participants in applying their knowledge within their institutions and professional networks. 

By strengthening core research and financial management and administration skills, fostering vital regional networks, and providing exposure to senior leadership perspectives, the workshop directly equips participants with the expertise and connections needed to confidently step into leadership roles within the field.
