Background
The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, with sites offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia and Kathmandu in Nepal. In Vietnam, we are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. OUCRU Nepal closely collaborates with the National Academy of Medical Sciences in Kathmandu, and OUCRU Indonesia exists in partnership with the University of Indonesia. As a Wellcome Trust Africa Asia Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991.

Job Summary
The Enumerator – Hepatitis B Serosurvey will support the implementation of a district-level serosurvey to assess hepatitis B prevalence among children (13–24 months) under the SPHERES initiative. The role involves conducting household or facility-based data collection, performing capillary blood collection (finger prick), and administering rapid diagnostic tests (HBsAg). The enumerator will work closely with field coordinator, health facilities, and district health offices to ensure high-quality data collection, adherence to study protocols, and compliance with ethical and biosafety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field data collection activities in accordance with study protocols, including participant identification, obtaining informed consent from caregivers, administering questionnaires, and accurately recording responses using paper-based or digital data collection tools.
- Perform capillary blood collection (finger prick) and conduct HBsAg rapid diagnostic tests following standard operating procedures, ensuring proper sample handling, test administration, timing, and interpretation of results.
- Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures, including safe handling of biological samples, proper use of personal protective equipment, and appropriate disposal of sharps and medical waste, while also supporting logistical arrangements for fieldwork such as preparation of materials (test kits, consent forms, data collection tools) and ensuring proper storage and transport of supplies.
- Maintain high standards of data quality and integrity by ensuring completeness and accuracy of collected data, performing routine checks, and promptly reporting any inconsistencies or issues to supervisors.
Qualifications
- Diploma (D3/D4) in Medical Laboratory Technology (TLM) is preferred; nurses or midwives with relevant laboratory experience may also be considered
- Demonstrated ability or willingness to perform capillary blood collection and rapid diagnostic testing
- Prior experience in field data collection, surveys, or community-based health activities is an advantage
- Familiarity with infection prevention and control (IPC) and basic clinical procedures
- Basic literacy in using smartphones or tablets for data collection
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to interact effectively with caregivers and community members
- Ability to work in field settings and travel within the district as required
