We are delighted to celebrate Dr Buddha Basnyat, who has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BMJ Awards South Asia 2026, held in New Delhi on 5 September 2026.
The BMJ Awards South Asia recognise individuals and teams making important contributions to healthcare across the region. The awards celebrate work across clinical care, research, education, innovation and healthcare leadership.
This recognition is particularly meaningful for OUCRU Nepal, where Dr Basnyat’s leadership and longstanding contribution to clinical research have had a lasting impact.
Dr Basnyat has dedicated many years to healthcare and clinical research in Nepal. His contribution, however, goes beyond publications and professional achievements. It can also be seen in the people he has mentored, the teams he has worked with, and the researchers and clinicians he has encouraged throughout his career.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes his “distinguished lifetime of leadership, service and exceptional contribution to healthcare.
Reflecting on receiving the award, Dr Basnyat said:
“I am very grateful to the British Medical Journal, which has given me career-defining breaks in my publishing career in medicine, starting with its 3 April 2004 issue, Health in South Asia.
In that print issue of the BMJ, I had a letter to the editor, a co-authored editorial, an important randomised controlled trial, and a magnificent ‘filler’ that I encouraged my young colleague, Puncho Gurung, to write, entitled A House Call in the Nepal Himalayas.
Many more publications have followed since then, including our most recent BMJ publication this September on altitude illness, with Sudeep Adhikari from our unit as the first and main author.”
A Lifetime Achievement Award recognises more than a single accomplishment. It reflects many years of commitment, leadership and contribution to healthcare and research.
For colleagues at OUCRU Nepal, it is wonderful to see Dr Basnyat’s longstanding contribution to healthcare and research recognised at the South Asian level.
