Guy qualified from Cambridge University and the United Medical and Dental schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ and trained in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology in Brighton, the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam, Imperial College London, and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London. His research interests focus on the management of severe bacterial infections, especially those involving the central nervous system. He has held Wellcome Trust Training (2001-2004) and Intermediate (2006-2011) Fellowships, and was recently awarded a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award (2016-2023) to further his research on tuberculosis in Vietnam.

In 2013 he was appointed Director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit and Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programme in Viet Nam. He is responsible for the scientific strategy and day-to-day management of the entire programme, which includes research units in Viet Nam, Nepal and Indonesia.






Prof. Thwaites has published more than 160 articles in international journals and has an H index of 41 (Scopus).
